Zeng Jinyan's blog

Zeng Jinyan is the 26 year-old wife of Hu Jia, the jailed Chinese AIDS and human rights activist who won the 2008 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought. (Above is the video played for the European Commission as she accepted the award on Hu Jia's behalf). She blogs frequently on her husband's condition, Chinese human rights issues, and her baby daughter Baobao and family.

Zeng Jinyan was selected as TIME Magazine's 100 People Who Shape Our World in 2007 as a hero and a pioneer. She faces daily police harassment and surveillance and has been held under house arrest several times, including episodes when the police were in the house with her and her family.

Since the video taped above in 2008,  Hu Jia's health is worsening and he has lost weight; he suffers from active hepatitis, including hepatitis-associated cirrhosis. In addition, his prison sentence of three years could be extended by the authorities if they are displeased that he or his family have not properly reformed their thinking. The AIDS Policy Project organized a successful international campaign to free Hu Jia during a previous, 2006 detention.

We are translating excerpts from Zeng Jinyan's blog into English and will post them here; they often switch from the ordinary to the horrendous in the space of a day or two.

Starting from tonight, Baobao will be sleeping in a room of her own; she should grow up independently. --Dec. 1st

On the 27th of this month, Hu Jia will have fully served 2 years of his sentence.
-Dec. 1st

I saw Hu Jia on Monday, he says that he stands no chance of being released for medical treatement; there have been several prisoners who were released on these grounds who didn’t live for longer than 6 months after release. Hu Jia said once again that he is a “prisoner of state” and that other prisoners enjoy certain rights, which he, himself, does not. --Dec. 1st

Baobao saw a tear-faced clay doll, and said: “Baobao is crying, mummy is going out, mummy is going to work.” --Dec. 1st

My phone is undoubtedly, completely wiretapped. Hu Jia’s uncle has called a few times from the phone at their family home wanting to go and visit Hu Jia in prison. Immediately after that, people from that area’s detention centre went and questioned that old man of about 90 years of age, asking him: “When are you going to visit your little brother?” --Nov. 28th

Hu Jia said that he has been receiving training in being an electrician this week; he’s been really busy. --Nov. 28th

Reading this really does provide a some sort of logical ground for future terrorist activities. Behind it is an omnipresent "benefactor" mentality. With this kind of mentality, someone could decide to randomly punish another person without being subject to any censure.

I don’t know whether it’s me being down in the dumps that’s affecting Baobao or if it’s because she still feels unwell, but she’s been bad tempered and quick to cry these past few days. --Nov. 26th

I’ve been reading the book Big River, Big Sea – Untold stories from 1949 by Long Yingtai for the past few days; it’s so unbearable. Words like sorrowful and unjust can’t describe it, it’s impossible to keep from crying reading this. --Nov. 26th

Finally able to reconnect to the internet, I’m in a hurry to see how it looks. Isn’t there some way of bringing some kind of disciplinary regulation into force, If China Unicom lose internet connectivity just one time, then we should receive ADSL free for a month? 10:35 PM Nov 15th from web

It shows and can easily be seen that prisons are not equipped properly to help Hepatitis patients recover, Hu Jia’s sentence is already more than half-way served (26th September) – the countdown to his return home is still on. 7:35 AM Oct 21st

This afternoon Granma, Baobao and I all went to visit Hu Jia – it’s this month’s visiting time. Hu Jia has had the cold for more than 2 months and isn’t getting any better; he’s also a lot thinner. Two more of the five hepatitis B tests proved positive, and the virus load had increased substantially. Prison staff found it unusual and brought Hu Jia to see the doctor in the prison hospital on the 16th. We still don’t know the results yet - early cirrhosis of the liver is a rich man’s disease – it’s a matter of getting the right nourishment, getting enough rest and keeping in a positive frame of mind and maybe then the disease can be prevented from turning ugly. 7:28 AM Oct 21st from Seesmic
@pearlher The “charge” for which Hu Jia is sentenced to 3 and a half years is “Incitement to Subvert State Power”. Guo Quan’s sentence of ten years is for “Subversion of State Power”. The sentence for the charge of “Subversion of State Power” is very heavy, so much so that one can be sentenced to an unlimited term; most people who are charged with this crime receive sentences of more than ten years. Have a look at the relevant “rules” in the Penal Code, it shows the absurdity of it and the “self-certified” dictatorship. 5:31 AM Oct 16th

RT@songshinan: RT @ranyunfei: RT @liudimouse: The wife of Guo Quan, Ms. Li Jing, said that Mr Guo’s defence lawyer, Guo Lianhui, called him today to tell him that at around 2pm this afternoon Nanjing Middle Level court sentenced Guo Quan to a ten year fixed-term sentence for the crime of   Subversion of State Power. It is estimated that the verdict will be given in a few days. 5:15 AM Oct 16th
