Cover Article: From Mice into Men: The Research Revolution We Need to Cure AIDS Now, by Regan Hofman with Tim Horn
The Doctor Is In: An interview with Anthony Fauci, PhD on the cure, in which he is asked about the AIDS Policy Project report, and lamely denies that they spend only 3% of their AIDS research budget on actually looking for one.
Interview by Regan Hofman, edited by Jennifer Morton.
Note: When asked about the AIDS Policy Project's assertion that the NIAID spends only 3% of its AIDS research budget on cure research, Dr. Fauci states that we don't include the indirect costs they spend on AIDS cure research. But they don't include indirect costs in calculating how much they are spending on AIDS vaccine research either, which is already 9.5 times more money than the NIH spends on AIDS cure research. If they, or we, did--vaccine spending would be even further through the roof. NIH spending doesn't include hundreds of millions of dollars spend on AIDS vaccine research by outside foundations. There is no similar outside spending on a cure for AIDS (amfAR, a leader in this research. has spent only $8 million since 2003, for instance). An AIDS vaccine would be a preventive measure, and wouldn't help the 33 million people currently living and dying with AIDS right now. For that, we need a cure. We need both, and both should be properly funded.
