The Treatment Action Campaign of South Africa is simply the largest
and most important grassroots AIDS organization in the
world.
Treatment Action Group of New York
Treatment Action Group (TAG) is an independent AIDS
research and policy think tank fighting for better treatment, a
vaccine, and a cure for AIDS.
TAG’s programs focus on antiretroviral treatments, HIV basic science
and immunology, vaccines and prevention technologies, hepatitis, and
tuberculosis.
TAG is a not-for-profit organization founded in 1992 and based in New York City.
American Foundation for AIDS Foundation
Founded in 1985, amfAR is dedicated to ending the global AIDS epidemic
through innovative research. With the freedom and flexibility to
respond quickly to emerging areas of scientific promise, amfAR plays a
catalytic role in accelerating the pace of HIV/AIDS research and
achieving real breakthroughs. amfAR-funded research has increased our
understanding of HIV and has helped lay the groundwork for major
advances in the study and treatment of HIV/AIDS. Since 1985, amfAR has
invested nearly $290 million in its mission and has awarded grants to
more than 2,000 research teams worldwide.
AmfAR is on the cutting edge in promoting and funding HIV eradication research.
Health GAP
(Health Global Access Project)
Health GAP is a public policy organization that focuses
on advocating for treatment and other services for people
with AIDS in developing countries. Current campaigns include
lobbying for money for the Global Fund for AIDS, TB and
Malaria; combatting unfair trade practices that restrict
access to life-saving medications; and compelling corporations
to offer affordable AIDS medication to their workers.
AIDSPAN
AIDSpan is a nonprofit organization that serves as a link
between the Global Fund for AIDS, TB and Malaria and
health advocates and officials worldwide. This web site
contains a wealth of information about the Global Fund.
ACT UP (The AIDS
Coalition to Unleash Power)
ACT UP, founded in New York, is a landmark, all-volunteer
grassroots patient rights organization. ACT UP New York
is doing exciting work and welcomes new people (their general
body meetings are not their best feature, however). If
you want to have a direct impact on the policies that affect
people with AIDS in your community or around the world,
join or start an ACT UP. Site includes activist resources
and links to ACT UP Philadelphia, ACT UP Paris and other
ACT UPs that continue to spring up around the US and the world.
The groups work together and share the same principles but each is separate, with a distinct
culture.
